Sherri Barnes, who is a librarian at UC Santa Barbara, has not only pondered this question, but taken action in creating a space about Black Feminism. In the world of academia one can become lost in the many theories, research, and projecst being conducted, but if you are a women of color you many not have the opportunity to become lost because you were never mentioned. It is important to create archives and bibliographies about women of color, because it not only allows one to research history but also to find a place in a world that has constantly ignored them. The bibliography created by Sherri Barnes is a site where women of color can enter into and find information on history,

Colonial Conquest

While I was reading and looking through the pages of the chapter titled, the "Colonial Conquest", I began to think about my body and how I have viewed it through the years. While growing up I was ashamed of my figure and would always critize myself about my hips, butt, and lips. I remember thinking to myself "if only they could be smaller. As I have grown, I'm learning to accept my figure and coming to the realization, that my body features are apart of my heritage. I wish other Black women would begin to research and realize, that out physical features are normal and need to be respected. Due to the media in todays world, our larger hips, butt, lips etc. are being exploited, not only by other cultures but by our own people. It would be nice to see one music video or positive media image, where the Black female body was appreciated for her features and not sexualized. When will this happen? I don 't know, but I feel as though our own people( men & woman) need to respect the Black female body and hopefully others would begin to follow suite.

Taking Photos

As I was taking photos last weekend for my 3-5 minute project, I noticed that most women aren't comfortable taking pictures on the spot. Every womwn I asked to take a photo had the same comment "I'm not ready" or "You want a photo of me?". This bothered me because this is the mind set that the beauty industry loves to tap into. The project that I'm presenting on Tuesday in class is called "You Just Be You",and deals with Blackwomen being comfortable in their own skin. My experiences dealing with beauty, has been a journey of growth and discovery. While growing up, I wasn't comfortable with my body and was always thinking of ways to change it or make it better. After years of feeling uncomfortable, I finally realized that changing my appearence wouldn't change the way I felt about myself. Working on this project brought up these feelings, and I hope while my classmates are viewing this film and listening to the music, they think of their experiences with beauty and confidence. Working on this project has been a positive outlet for me and I hope that others can relate to it in some way.
